I (Just) Don’t Care

Hi Everyone,

Happy Monday! Two blogs in less than ten days is a bit of a record for me lately. For anyone who is curious, the earth has not fallen off its axis. But I did feel the earth move under my feet. 😉 Here is today’s blog.

About a year ago, I was having a conversation with a co-worker. He asked me something and my smiling response was, “I don’t care.” Now that might seem bitchy but it wasn’t and he knew it. “If I cared I’d know, right? That’s just not on my radar and never was.” And that is the thing. What is important to one person is not always important to another. “I (just) don’t  care,” has been one of my mantras for years. It makes life interesting, fun. This is what I mean.

So I have a part-time job that I usually go to once a week. The manager and I have a bizarre relationship that only a few people understand. Like one day, out of the purple, he decided to address me by another name. We were standing five feet away from each other and speaking with another and he said, “Right Tracy?” When I didn’t answer him, he addressed me by another name. Confused I said, “Are you speaking to me?” He said, “Yes I was Rhonda. When was the last time you had your ears cleaned?”

Other co-workers just stared at us as customers continued shopping. That’s when I burst out laughing. As I laughed he asked me if I was okay like I needed “help”.  I was okay I said. Then he asked me how I felt with him addressing me by different names. “I don’t care. Call me whatever you want.” “Really?” he asked. “Yes.” The only way he could have been happier was if he just finished ringing up a thousand dollar sale at his till in one transaction. From that second on, he’s called me every name in the female baby book. There are three names that are off-limits though and he hasn’t called me them since. We do have some boundaries.

Because I usually work with him twice a month, I didn’t hear him the first two times he called me over the P.A. As my other co-workers waited to see if I would acknowledge him, it was clear he lost the bet. After several attempts, I now arrive the first time. Both of us crack up several times a day over whatever name he decides to call me. Some employees still haven’t figured out what all the laughing is about. Who knows? Maybe they just don’t care. The ones who do know have as much fun as the manager and I do.

The point of today’s blog is that we all have a choice as to what we are going to focus our attention on. What is really important to one person may not be important to another. That’s okay. And it’s okay to have fun! I had to add that because  there are so many people that care about things I would never waste my time on. When they do try to waste my time, with let’s say, gossip, I simply tell them, “I (just) don’t care.” That usually stops them. And I am going to stop now.
