Hi Everyone,
As an Information Junkie, I watch the news a few times a day, read the local paper as much as I can, and read the free Metro or the 24 hours paper every day one or both are available. I do the above no matter what is going on in my life. This is why.
Outside of wanting or in some cases, needing to be informed, I am curious by nature. I always have been and probably always will be. That is how I became an Information Junkie in the first place. And as an Information Junkie, I like to watch the news on varying channels. My first choice is BBC World. The reason for this is because, in my opinion, they always have the latest news from around the world before anyone else does. For me CBC News is second because it deals with issues in Canada and I am a Canadian, so I like to know what is happening in the country I live and was born in. Depending on what is going on in the world event or economic wise I will flip between CNBC and/or CNN. I loved it when I got Bloomberg, but that is now a specialty channel and I already pay for BBC. Plus if I had Bloomberg, I’d probably never get anything done. ;D
As I was watching the 6:00 pm news, after a long day, I just thought, “The news is nauseating!” and I promptly changed the channel. The following day was no different. But then I got to thinking. Yes, the news can be nauseating. There is doom and gloom somewhere in the world at any given time. Sure the news channels try to pepper some feel good stories into their allotted time but those feel good stories never outweigh the misery, devastation, etc. Let’s face it, in the last week there has been two major shootings in the States and one in Nairobi. Never mind everything else that is going on.
All of that negative news can really affect someone. It affected me. I changed the channel twice from the 6:00 pm news to something else two nights in a row. Mindless TV is what I sought instead of information. My burying my head in the sand is highly unusual but I still did it. So I understand when people want to do that, not know what is really going on in the world. Yes, at times I, too would like to think the world is wonderful and that unicorns still existed but guess what? That would not only be naïve, it would be a HUGE mistake.
I, like everyone reading this blog, live on this planet. We should know what is going on in our own backyard and around the world! There are some really hot topics that affect us at every level. The news can be nauseating, but I’d rather know what is going on than not!
So I don’t buy into that, “I just want to stay positive, so I won’t watch the news or read the newspaper.” That to me is just plain stupid! For one, I highly doubt that the people who refuse to read the paper or watch the news know everything there is to know about everything! If you want to bury your head in the sand go ahead! But when something happens, because something is happening around the world all the time, and you aren’t prepared because you wanted to remain positive, don’t blame anyone but yourself! It would be your own damn fault!
Thank you for reading, A. Rebel’s Rant! ;D
