The Yo-Yo Relationship

Hi Everyone,

Since St. Valentine’s Day is approaching, I thought I would stick with the theme of relationships. Here is today’s blog.

Okay so if you haven’t already experienced, “The Yo-Yo Relationship,” chances are either you didn’t know it, didn’t want to admit it, or having been living under a rock!  Me?  Well, I’ve had a few. When it comes to relationships even having experienced one like that is one too many. So I have some experience when it comes to, “The Yo-Yo Relationship.”

The one thing that I have learned is that when I was young, dumb and full of let’s say, inexperience I accepted, “The Yo-Yo Relationship,” as part of life. Now I think it is a rite of passage only when someone doesn’t know what they want. And let’s face it, when we are young a lot of us don’t know what we want. But now as I look back on my life I think that, “The Yo-Yo Relationship,” is a waste of time. This is why.

Love makes people do stupid things. It doesn’t matter how old we are, when love has a hold of us it doesn’t let go. It is hard to think rationally. Even if everyone is telling us that what we are experiencing is wrong, we don’t listen. Reason is not part of our vocabulary. Nothing to do with reason makes sense. Being reasonable is insane to us. Love, or lust, has taken over every part of our being.

Because we can’t, or refuse to, think clearly we want someone one day, or minute, and then the next we don’t. This is partly because we don’t sit down with ourselves long enough to figure out what we want. Instead of taking some time to better understand ourselves and our present and future circumstances, as we review the past of the relationship we are in, our emotions just keep bouncing up and down like a yo-yo. This is not good for either person. Someone has to stop the madness. Unfortunately putting an end to a relationship that has run its course takes guts.

No one wants to be, “mean” by hurting the feelings of someone they once cared for and still has positive feelings for. Sometimes putting an end to a relationship is really hard. But what is harder? Living with the up’s and down’s that could last for days, weeks, months or years?  Or putting an end to a relationship now and forever?

I am for putting an end to the relationship now and forever with an added dose of never ever again. But I am not you. I am me. I don’t intimately know the circumstances of anyone’s relationships but my own. And even then, at the time, I only knew my side of them. Now if I found myself in, “The Yo-Yo Relationship,” I would cut the ties and try to move forward so that I could find a better, healthier relationship. Everyone deserves to be happy and not at the expense of another. That’s just sick.

Maybe breaking up with someone before St. Valentine’s Day seems cruel. But if someone you were involved in wanted to break up with you, but didn’t because St. Valentine’s Day was coming up, how would you feel this or next year?
