Hi Everyone,
If you think the title of this blog is ridiculous, then you haven’t met the dogs owners I have. This is what I mean.
Ever since I moved back to Toronto, I am of the belief that I have had the misfortune of being in the presence of more bad dog owners than good. I am serious. And the worst part is for the majority of the time, I have been stuck with them on public transit. It happened–again.
On a recent Monday, I was running late. Instead of walking a few blocks before getting on the TTC, and taking my time, I got on the first bus because I was running out of it. BIG mistake! For one a female decided that she and her dog weren’t going to wait in the invisible line created by those of us who have been there before those who weren’t. I let that one slide partly because she was talking to the TTC bus driver. After I passed them I began walking down the aisle I stopped because a dog was sitting on its hind legs in front of its male owner. Moments later the dog owner who wasn’t waiting at the bus stop sat across from me. Both dog owners begin to have a pleasant chat. Great. One dog beside me and another across from me.
Before I had time to be feel the fear of being surrounded by dogs, they started growling and then of course barking at each other. The dog beside me was all muscle and weighed almost as much as I do and slightly less than the owner. That is a scary thought since according to him, his dog is really a puppy. He could barely pull him back from attacking the dog across from me. Each owner found the incident amusing. Right because having two large dogs fighting is really just their way of getting to know each other, like two children in the playground, not a TTC bus.
As the bus pulled away from its stop, I got up, asked to be dropped off as soon as possible and stood at the front of the bus. By this time, a sense of reason reached the female dog owner to move to the back entrance. Since I had my back to everyone, I didn’t know that. Even more behind, I decided that I couldn’t wait for the next bus so I got off the bus to enter by the back entrance and walked into the female dog owner. She greeted with me a raspberry because she’s all class. I continued past her and sat so she could stare at my hair. She made a few remarks that I had the pleasure of ignoring.
Once the bus pulled into the subway station, the female dog owner was out of sight and the male dog owner and I ended up on the same the subway. It was packed. That did not stop the hundred pound plus puppy from sprawling on the floor right by an entrance. People were forced to choose between walking around the puppy or using another exit. People entered the subway a few steps, backed out and entered by the closest door. The male dog owner was unfazed.
Should dogs be allowed on public transit? IMHO only if the people responsible for the dogs can control them and themselves.
Thank you for reading, A. Rebel’s Rant! ;D
