Hi Everyone,
The homeless are with us wherever we decide to go but few of us actually do anything to help them help themselves. Even fewer of us recognize the economic impact that they have on all of our lives. This video breaks it down for us and the figures are astounding.
One thing that I have ALWAYS made a point of paying attention to is how the people in my life treat the homeless and/or the less fortunate. Most people are barely kind at best. (That’s another reason I don’t really like people. Here’s the link for that blog, http://arebelsrant.com/i-dont-really-like-people/)
I once dated a man who had A LOT, and I do mean A LOT of money. As we walked the streets of Toronto one summer day, not only did he refuse to give any money to the panhandlers, he also tried to discourage me from giving them money too. And it was my money!
That went over like a lead balloon.
The more he tried to stop me the more I wanted to and did in fact give some of the panhandlers money. This of course drove him crazy. That experience taught me a lot.
And yes, I know the inner workings of how some of the panhandlers use the money that they receive. From my hundreds of hours of watching documentaries I also know how some people arrive on the streets and/or are driven into poverty and/or prostitution.
But every time I see a homeless person or someone who is less fortunate, I always think, “If not for the grace of God that could be me.”
Give them a cigarette if you smoke. If you have some change, drop some in a cup. Buy some $5 gift cards from coffee shops and hand them out. If it’s one thing I know for a fact, no one is exempt from misfortune.
