This book has been skirting my life for decades. This is what I mean.
When I was growing up I read a lot of books and always had at least one with me. I read everywhere. Reading kept me out of trouble.
My favourite genres were biographies of drug addicts who were also singers. I read horror by Stephen King and Dean R. Koontz and smut by Harold Robbins, Sidney Sheldon and any other author I could get my hands on. I read so much smut, that I am surprised I don’t write it fulltime. I will admit that over the years I have scribbled a few notes here and there but nothing serious. And that is what happened with, Valley of the Dolls.
When I was in my teens someone told me I should read it but I never did. Later when someone handed me a copy I snubbed them as I handed it back to them. I thought the book was too girlie. Years later, although I warmed up to the book, it was the same thing. I would see it in the book store, hear someone talk about it and the movie yet I ket putting it off. I knew I would read it, I just didn’t know when. I didn’t even rush out to get the book after I saw the movie about the author titled, Scandalous Me: The Jaqueline Susann Story. That was weird since I was in my forties and lived steps from one of the largest books stores in a 50 plus kilometre radius. A few weeks later I watched the movie for a second time, because I loved it so much, and still didn’t rush to buy, Valley of the Dolls or borrow it from the library which was the largest in the area and had access to every library in southern Ontario. For whatever reason my gut was telling me it wasn’t time. That feeling stayed with me when I was in my fifties and saw the 50th anniversay copy. Months later it was the same thing.
I loved the movie about Jaqueline Susann’s life. It showed parts of the Valley of the Dolls movie yet I still didn’t read the book. It was like I was waiting, but for what?
Months later I was at a book club meeting just before Christmas. Instead of buying gifts for people we barely knew, everyone brought a gently used book. Each book was wrapped and had a description. If someone else wanted your book, they could ask for it and it was theirs. One of the young ladies got Valley of the Dolls. I could hardly wait to see if I could get it, and I did. And I loved it!
Valley of the Dolls, by Jaqueline SusannĀ is a timeless book and I hardly recommend it.
