Hi Everyone,
We all know it is getting darker earlier so when you are crossing the street please pay more attention.
Wearing dark clothing at night is a recipe for disaster. If you cannot buy a new coat etc. try getting a reflective arm band or reflective tape to put on your clothing so that you can be seen better. At the very least have something like a scarf or hat that is another colour of your coat etc.
At one of my jobs I was trained to make eye contact with the each driver around me. I am urging you to do this too. Not every driver sees you. By making eye contact you are ensuring your safety and the safety of those in your care. Crossing on a green light and looking both ways should always be done too.
Why am I telling you this? Well tonight , at 9:15 pm, I crossed a street on a green light with the pedestrian sign flashing for me to cross. The sign said that I had 23 seconds left. There was no traffic when I began crossing. A car was turning left. The driver didn’t see me and was in a hurry. Was I wearing bright clothing? Yes. Did I make eye contact with the driver? Yes. It was hard not to, he was 5 feet away!
I stopped walking before he stopped driving. When he did stop he waited for me to finish crossing but I decided to wave, indicating that I wasn’t moving. He already almost hit me once, why give him another chance? He finally drove past me.
Not even a minute later I was crossing a driveway of an apartment building. The driver saw me coming long before I approached, and reversed off of the sidewalk allowing me to pass. Since I was almost hit by a car a few moments ago, I went up to the driver’s window and thanked him for reversing and giving me the right of way. I also told him how I was almost hit by a car less than a minute ago.
A passenger of the car told me how he was hit by a car, landed on the hood of it and held onto the windshield wipers until the driver stopped! That’s scary!
Just as I turned to leave, I looked back and called out, “_______?”
The driver said, “Anna? I thought I knew you.” My hair was not the usual curly mass of hair he always saw me with for years. Tonight my hair is straight and in a side-pony. I understood his not recognizing me.
“Well the last time I saw you was years ago.” I explained. We quickly caught up we exchanged numbers.
Am I wondering if my old, yet younger flame will call? Kind of. I found it flattering that he asked for my number. I had some good and great times with my old, yet younger flame. ;D
Please be careful when you are crossing the street or driveways. You might get hit by a vehicle or….
