“I’d Rather Die on my Feet Than Live on my Knees.”

Hi Everyone,

The title of this blog is one of my favourite sayings because it defines me. This is what I mean.

For anyone who doesn’t know, people who believe in the saying, “I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees,” don’t go along to get along. That means that they are not easily swayed by others. They stick to what they believe, know to be true, about themselves and about life. They believe what they believe. PERIOD.

The online example oversimplifies the above by stating if someone says their favourite flavour of ice cream is chocolate and someone else likes vanilla they won’t say chocolate to fit in, belong. Instead, they will continue to state that vanilla is their favourite even if their life depended on it. That means that they would die loving vanilla and die loving what they believe. And yes, I know that there are times when people are in dangerous, tricky situations that they have to say and do things that they might normally do to protect themselves. That is not what I am talking about.

Wishy washy people are easy to manipulate, control. They rarely raise their voice, and they never voice an educated opinion because they don’t have one. They just float through life listening to what anyone and everyone around them says never questioning what they are told, believing everything they read in the paper, on the Internet and what they hear from anyone within earshot. Because they believe the BS they never question it, challenge it.

These people scare me. These people are the reason I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees. These people also make it easy to see through the BS. No one, by the way, likes that.

It’s hard to go against the grain, to say what you believe is true and stick with it. And yes, some people can and do make it really hard. I get that. But here’s what people don’t get—it’s even harder to not have an educated opinion, than have one. Little leaps of logic are a great start. Two and two still equal four.

Stop believing everything by questioning some things. My favourite line is, “Does that even make sense to you? Seriously?” My second favourite line is, “Did you just hear what you said?” Yes, I know, I am not going to score any points with anyone. But that’s the point! I am not here to score points or keep score. I just want people to wake up, look around at what is happening around them, start talking about topics that affect us all, spread the word, and maybe, just maybe, organize themselves to do something.

You know it’s okay to strongly believe in one or more things. In my experience it’s not okay to be lead by the nose and have everyone step on your toes. If you choose to live on your knees, you are choosing to be a slave. Each of makes decisions everyday. Doing nothing requires a decision. What are you choosing to do?
