Hi Everyone,
Writer’s block is and isn’t an excuse. This is what I mean.
When I first started writing I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to write about so I just never started. Or if I did start, then I just never finished what I started. It was like I wanted whatever I was going to write to be perfect the first, or at least the second time. And then of course what always happens is that once you decide to write something, another great idea pops into your head. Then deciding what to write ends up being not writing anything that you thought of until you think of something else. If anyone has lost track, that would be the third thing.
Writing is like anything else in life. Writing is work. Sometimes it is easy, other times, not so much. Writing takes practice. Writing takes time, effort. If you really want to be a writer, doctor, or engineer, then you will stick with it long enough to figure it out. That also means that you will have a bit of a plan.
I take my writing very seriously. Sure there have a been a few months where I wasn’t even writing this blog. Life got in the way because I let it. For anyone who has noticed, I am blogging more. Just like everyone else, I have 24 hours in a day, but a few things have changed.
For one I can’t remember the last time I had writer’s block. It must be 10-12 years ago. A reason for this is that I am always out-and-about doing things that are different. Which can be like a double-edged sword depending on your point of view. From an every day person, it can seem a bit weird. From a writer’s perspective it is great.
Hemingway has an awesome saying. It is, “In order to write about life first you must live it.” If you live a cookie-cutter life, then you better be highly creative to write anything good. Getting up at the same time, because you live in the same area, going to the same job, seeing the same people on transit to the same job where you see the same people and never leaving your 6 blocks is how a lot of people live. Even those in the gig-economy tend to travel in the same circles. At least they some variety in their life experiences. Or as I like to say, some (good) stories.
Since this is the second piece of writing on my list of four, quite possibly five today, I am going to cut this short. Writer’s block is an excuse if you let it be. Sit down, write something and then something else. Start with one sentence. If it is good keep it until you can think of something better.
Keep writing. Write long-hand. Write in your head. Write on a napkin. Take notes in your phone. Always have a piece of paper and a pencil or pen with you. Write something everyday, even if it isn’t good. Have a few projects on the go. If you get stuck, get out of your head and do something else for a few minutes. Read something. Live life. And remember, every time you are not doing something you say want to, you are blocking yourself and just making an excuse.
Thank you for reading, A. Rebel’s Rant! ;D
