Hi Everyone,
Happy Sunday! And happy last day of August. Groan I know. I trust everyone is enjoying their las long weekend of the summer. I know I am. Today’s blog is on the lighter side. This is what I mean.
You know when you are out and about and don’t notice something until you do? Well that happened to me just last week. I was standing on a subway platform in Toronto and I heard an announcement. It was, “(A bunch of numbers.) Please call Control.”
Now I’ve heard that announcement countless times before with probably the same numbers but I always dismissed it. The reason I didn’t dismiss is last week is because I watched a movie called, Kontroll, a few days before. Kontroll is spelt the way it is because it is a foreign film. And for anyone who doesn’t already know, I am into foreign films.
Since I am Hungarian and want to brush up on my Hungarian I have watched the 2003 comedy-thriller, Kontroll, twice. The movie is spoken in Hungarian yet it has English and Serbian subtitles. Yea, I thought that was on odd combination too. 🙂 Anyway….
Kontroll is based around the lives of the subway employees who are ticket inspectors and their encounters with subway passengers. The movie has won a series of awards like the Golden Hugo at the Cannes Film Festival, the Best Foreign Language Film at the Chicago Film Festival, the Best Director at the Copenhagen International Film Festival and the Best of the Fest at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Unfortunately it did not win at TIFF, (Toronto International Film Festival) which starts on Thursday September 4, 2014. (On a side note, I won a pair of tickets to an exclusive screening for one of the movies at TIFF yesterday. I am telling you this because there are still tickets to be won. Just look for the Pepsi Pop-Up Stands, grab a free pop, like I did, sit in a chair, like I did, and “scratch” on the notebook. If you are lucky, like I was, you’ll win some free tickets too! There are going to be two more Pepsi Pop-Up Stands, one is going to be somewhere on Richmond)
I enjoyed Kontroll. Some of the words and phrases got lost in translation but that always happens. From what I remember one escalator of the Budapest Metro (subway) System is very close to being a 90 degree angle, which as a child, freaked me out and still freaks me out to this day. If you decide to watch the movie you’ll know what I mean.
Super long story super short, if you copy the URL you can watch the movie Kontroll. Here it is, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnalWHCX8U
Not much of a rant I know. Stay tuned. True rants are on their way!
Thank you for reading, A. Rebel’s Rant! ;D
