Should Toronto Have Safe Injection Sites? Part 2

Hi Everyone,

Again there are some things in life I just can’t make up. This is what I mean.

A few days ago I was walking along a laneway and I heard a guy yelling for Narcan. It is the other name for Naloxone, the drug used to reverse an opioid drug overdose. As he was yelling I saw a couple get up from where they were sitting and move towards two guys. One had overdosed and his friend was still yelling for Narcan (Naloxone). Seconds later he was yelling for someone to call 911.

The girl who looked scared out of her mind, did nothing for a few moments before she called 911. Then the guy she was with jumped on his bycycle and rode off. Confusion and chaos took over the laneway as the one guy continued to shake his friend as he repeatedly pleaded for him to, “Come back man, come back.” The girl was screaming to someone else on the phone about the overdose.

In less than 2 minutes the guy who rode off was back and handed a Narcan/Naloxone kit to the guy holding his friend. The couple moved back to where they were sitting, which just happens to be where they were about to shoot up themsleves. The guy then injected the Narcan/Naloxone into his friends’ arm. An ambulance drove by. The girl began screaming at it. Then she looked at me and said, “No one cares.” I thought that was interesting.

People do care.

In fact people care a lot.

If we, society didn’t care, there wouldn’t be a Safe Injection Site, less than 250 metres from where the guy overdosed, and from where the couple was about to shoot up. If we, society didn’t care, there wouldn’t be FREE NARCAN/NALOXONE KITS available at Safe Injection Sites, Overdose Prevention Sites, in every pharmacy in Ontario, in ambulances and other organizations that I can’t think of now. If we, society didn’t care, we wouldn’t hand-out Harm Prevention Kits to people who smoke crack (cocaine) and/or use needles for free but we do because we don’t want people who use, abuse or are addicted to drugs to get HIV/AIDS or spread Hepatitis C. People who have diabetes have to pay for all of their own supplies to manage their illness. Drug users don’t. And yes that is a little known fact.

Maybe the people in that laneway should alter their thinking.

Maybe they should be recognize that the Safe Injection Site is there for a reason. Maybe they should recognize that from the four of them not one of them had a free Narcan/Naloxone Kit when they knew they were going to shoot up. Maybe they should be reminded that they get their needles, antiseptic wipes, and bands for free. Maybe they should recognize that not everyone does drugs and probably doesn’t agree with their lifestyle. Maybe they should carry Narcan/Naloxon and shoot up in a Safe Injection Site and care about their lives.

Literally seconds after the guy was revived by the Narcan/Naloxone, he was walking around. As I told someone, “It was like he just got out of a chair. He was fine and was walking beside his friend who was pushing a bike. I think if the guy who overdosed had a bike, he would’ve rode off with his friend. It was weird.” Maybe everything about what happened that day is weird. Maybe truth is stranger than fiction.
