Ever race deals with racism but pulling the race card at every turn is just going to piss people off–a lot. Over my 50 odd years of life experience I can tell you that there have been times when I have felt really uncomfortable because someone, for no reason that I could tell, mentions rascism. Here are three examples.
So I am at work, and out of the blue I hear a young girl tell a woman that only White people harass Black people. I shut that down pretty quickly with, “Oh no, no, no, there have been a lot A LOT of times when I, as an almost 50 year-old, skinny White woman have been harassed by Black women and men.” Well that conversation stopped right there. And I am pretty sure everyone in that room hasn’t spoken to me since, even though I never started the conversation.
And that happened again yesterday. As I was just hanging around and a group of us were talking a man this time said, “It’s because she’s Black,” twice. After the second time I said, “We are just having a conversation that has nothing to do with race. And that is the second time you mentioned it, like why?” For anyone who is interested, he stopped speaking to me and left shortly after.
This last example really blows me away.
Okay so I know someone who runs an Airbnb. One night a woman from Italy, who found the place online, shows up unannounced. Like no reservations, nothing after 9:30 at night to boot and gets the last available room. Since the Airbnb is always busy and it was high season, she was told she would have to move to another room because the one she was in was booked by someone else. She said, “Is it because I am Black?” to which the person said, “No, it is because that room was booked months ago, and you didn’t make a reservation for that or any room.” Since, according to them, she still didn’t believe them, they showed her pictures of their mulatto goddaughter, to prove to her that it wasn’t because they were racist, it was because she didn’t bother to book a room. On a side note, I am pretty sure the person who runs the Airbnb isn’t into White people. I am also pretty sure the owner of the Airbnb doesn’t care what race the guests are as long as they don’t destroy the place and pay in full. It is after all a business, in Toronto, one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world.
Every race deals with racism but pulling the race card at every turn is just going to piss people off–a lot.
