Hi Everyone,
This blog is a combination of a lot of things. This is what I mean.
Earlier this week I went to Sugar Beach for two reasons. The first was to read by the beach and the second was to take a few videos of all the construction around Queen’s Quay. Since there is so much construction I took three videos each about a minute long and sent them off to Europe. One of my cousins replied with, Then there will be lots of condos for sale, followed by, Toronto is a world class city with large, yet beautiful buildings. Some of the buildings are beautiful, interesting. And most of them are tall. After I replied, Yes but they are very expensive, my cousin said, It is like that everywhere, to which I said, Of course, because it is expensive everywhere.
Later that day I stopped by one of my friends and we were talking about Airbnbs and the cost of renting. What would you do if the landord died and whoever inherits this property decides to sell it? Where would you live? I asked. Their answer was they would find another place. But where? I asked. This is something I, and a lot of other people I know, have asked.
Then the next day the StarMetro had an article titled, How Much Do Canadians Actually Spend on Rent? Since I didn’t have time to read it, I placed it in my bag for when I got home. On my way there I saw my landlord. After I said hi I did the usual which is ask him how he’s feeling and if he is going to sell the building. As usual he told me he felt fine and no he isn’t going to sell, but if he does sell, he will take care of us tenants. Even though I believe my landlord, I am still socking away money because things happen and real estate in Toronto is insane. Then I asked if he had any other apatments I could move into. He said that he didn’t and that, Rent is crazy. And it is.
The next day I came across a YouTube video from earlier this year about the cost of rent in Amsterdam and how it is effecting the people there, which is pretty much the same way rent is effecting everyone. People there, just as people here and pretty much everywhere, can’t affford to live in Amsterdam. But here is the thing, it is expensive everywhere and it is not going to stop. Pick a city, any city, because it does not even have to be world class city, renting or buying anywhere in the world is not cheap at all.
And that brings me to Wednesday’s the newspaper article I finally got around to reading earlier today. It states that Ontario has the largest number of people paying over 30, sometimes 40, 50% and more of their money on rent. It also states that it is not just in big cities like Toronto. It is everywhere. And I believe it.
The reality of renting is that it doesn’t matter if you live in a city or in a suburb in Ontario. The price of rent doesn’t really change. But it is the expensive everywhere. It is the new normal.
Thank you for reading, A. Rebel’s Rant! ;D
