Hi Everyone,
As I was out and about yesterday, I decided to stop for a coffee. Smokers have a habit of having a coffee and cigarette so I thought I’d sit down and do both as I looked at my surroundings which included the construction.
So I was sitting on a window sill, sipping my coffee and smoking my cigarette. A few seconds later a security guard approaches me and says, “Excuse me Miss.”
I look up to him and answer, “Yes?”
He sternly says, “There’s no smoking here.”
“Oh, okay.” I calmly replied as I looked around confused as to where I could (legally) smoke. Completely lost I politely asked him, “Where should I go then?”
As he gave me my first option, I noticed that his voice had softened. I look in that direction. It seemed far. Then he gave me a second option, I glanced in that direction which was farther than the first as he gave me my third option. I gathered my belongings and told him, “I’m going with option one.” Then I thanked him and left.
As I climbed the stairs, I thought, “I get it, but by the time I get to the “smoking area,” I’ll be done my smoke”. This is how smokers think by the way.
When I got to the top of the stairs and turned left, as per my instructions, I saw a woman smoking and I told her why I was standing beside her.
“That kind of sucks” she said.
My response was, “You know what, honestly, I don’t really care. He’s doing his job and I get it. I just didn’t know where to smoke. That’s all.”
The stranger put her book away and we started talking. Close to the end of our conversation I asked her where she worked. She told me City Hall. I smiled to myself. Then I asked her how to change a by-law, (yes, I am still working on the heat issue) and the interesting thing is, she told me the easiest way. I was very happy!
But this blog isn’t about that. The point of this blog is this.
There is no reason to get angry at someone for doing their job. I mean that’s what they are paid to do right? But still, for whatever reason, people don’t like being told what, when, how or why to do something. A lot of people get really pissed off when someone, like a paid employee tells them to do or not to do something.
But for what? For doing their job? Granted people may not get yelled at for not doing their job, but they might lose it. You know their job, and all the things that their PAY cheque provides for them.
Hmmm. So we can get angry when people do their job, but we can also get angry when people don’t do their job? How does that work?
Would you like to be yelled at for doing your job? Of course that question can only be honestly answered if you have or have had a job for longer than say a year and actually did it properly. Unfortunately a lot of people have NEVER had a job and a lot of people who have had a job, or are currently working don’t do their jobs well, if at all. (To get a better idea of what I mean, here are two links. The first is for, Some People’s Children, http://arebelsrant.com/some-peoples-children/ The second is called, The New Cradle and the Grave? http://arebelsrant.com/the-new-cradle-to-the-grave-2/ )
I am pretty sure that the security guard who told me, “there’s no smoking here,” has had a few people yell at him. That’s probably why he was polite to me when I didn’t yell at him or hassle him in any way.
And just for the record, I have been angry/pissed off at people when they have and have not done their job, properly or well, at all. Here’s a link to a past blog called, Going Postal? http://arebelsrant.com/going-postal/
Thank you for reading, A. Rebel’s Rant! ;D
