What Do You Do with Your Money?

Hi Everyone,

This blog is a combination of three conversations from people who seem to have strong opinions of how I use my money. This is what I mean.

Remember when Southern Ontario was cold and the majority of us were wearing winter boots? Well on one of those days someone who I kind of know said, “Nice kicks! How much did they set you back?” At first Ijust stared at them because it is one thing to compliment someone, but it is a whole another thing to ask someone you kind of know how much they paid for something. When I didn’t answer, they asked, “No really, how much did they cost?” I am serious.

Instead of telling them the true price I said, “Get this, I bought them a few months ago when they were full price and now you can get these for like $30!” As they narrowed their eyes at me, I thought about the things I know they spend their money on per day with nothing to show. I could buy a new pair of boots at full price every day of the week.

Around the same time, I needed to buy some leather conditioner/protector for my other winter boots. I paid a fair bit for them when they were on sale after Christmas two years ago and I wanted to take care of them. They are great boots! When someone asked me where I went I told them to the mall, to get the conditioner/protector. Being the Nosy Nellie that they are, they asked me how much it cost. At the time, I couldn’t remember, and I was a bit pissed off that they would ask. Who cares? My reply was, “I don’t remember. I needed it, so I bought it.” That comment had them rolling their eyes and shaking their head. I know I am not the only one who takes care of their belongings. I am the only one in that conversation though.

This last one I don’t understand. Someone who I only met me twice said, “You must love shopping.” My reply was, “Actually, I hate shopping,” because I do. After they commented on my wardrobe I could tell they didn’t seem convinced.

Since my first blog in November 2012, I think I have blogged about how much I hate shopping at least three if not more times. After a quick calculation, that I have checked twice, I figure that I spend less time physically shopping for clothes, shoes, food, etc. and doing my banking than my clothes spend in the washing machine for a weekly 50 minute cycle. Again, I am serious. And I would like to add that I don’t do online shopping of any kind and I do online banking less than once every three months. Shopping to me is still a waste of time and energy!

I don’t know or really care about what other people do with their money. It is none of my business. And the last thing I am going to do is assume that I know either.
