Hi Everyone,
I have a hard time understanding this but here I go. This is what I mean.
The other day I was reading a tweet that said a woman would be sad and angry when, The Big Bang Theory, ends. I thought that was an interesting first world problem to have. Why would she or anyone be sad or angry that a TV show is coming to an end when there are so many old episodes to watch? Sure they may not be in any order, but still. If she watched the show all the time, would it matter? And if so how much? Why wouldn’t she just watch something else? There are new TV shows all the time. Maybe she could find her that show on Netflix or Hulu or something.
After a few minutes I wondered, was she following, The Big Bang Theory, in the same way that people used to follow soap operas? I will admit it, I used to watch soap operas. One was called, Another World, and the other was called, Guiding Light. Both were cancelled. The first was Another World which I could barely watch because it was on at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. When Guiding Light was cancelled I was a bit upset since it was on twice a day. If I missed the 3 o’clock episode I could always watch it the next morning at 10 o’clock. Since even that rarely fit into my schedule I was grateful for the 1-2 episodes I could watch per week. But here is the thing, Guiding Light was a part of my life for over 20 years! That is a long time. And it was an hour program. Some TV shows barely make past two years if that! Soap operas just don’t have the market they used to. Most of their market has either died off or is in the process. Sad but true. It is also sad to think that someone would be that invested in a TV show.
I get it. TV shows can connect with us in ways that the people in our lives just can’t. Characters on a TV show can give us just what we need. Like a good laugh, a good cry, or the ability to make us think even when we tell ourselves that we want to unplug. TV shows can give us something to talk about the next day or in an online forum. TV shows and movies are a great escape, if you want one that is. I get it. I also don’t get into TV shows or a heck of a lot of movies either.
If you are going to be sad or angry that your favourite TV show is coming to an end, I hope you will be okay. In the meantime, I will be reading or listening to an audio book.
Thank you for reading, A. Rebel’s Rant! ;D
