Hi Everyone,
Since I could go on about government gatekeepers forever, I’m going to keep it short. This is partly to maintain my sanity. Here is today’s blog.
Every aspect of our lives revolves around some level of government, be it municipal, provincial/territorial or federal. But the government is a business. If you thought otherwise, get that out of your head. It will save you a lot of grief. The government, no matter the level, only governs to rule with authority, to conduct the affairs of a country or organization that suits its agenda. The government is in the business to first protect its own at all costs to the taxpayer. It rarely ends well for anyone trying to get the government to admit they are wrong because the government is filled with people. And each person has their own agenda. That’s where the government gatekeepers come in.
The first thing that the government gatekeepers do is avoid any issue that will make them, their superiors or anyone that the government has contact with look bad. A great example of this is when the Harper government distanced themselves from Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. When Rob Ford couldn’t avoid the press any longer he began denying everything. Denial is the second tactic. During that time, the provincial and federal government kept quiet. That is until someone had to say something, because all Canadians were being portrayed in an unfavourable light in as many media outlets and formats as there are countries.
The third is to deflect or diminish; whatever comes or is needed first. Rob Ford repeatedly diminished his drinking and drug use. Here’s a head’s up. If you weigh more than a little, it takes a lot of anything to get you drunk or high. Even if you have a low tolerance, your weight will automatically compensate.
After weeks of silence the Harper government was forced to comment on Rob Ford. Their comment diminished Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine, but emphasized Justin Trudeau’s smoking pot. If the government can’t spin something in their favour, they’ll twist the truth until it is unrecognizable to even them. That’s the cover-up, the fourth thing government gatekeepers do. There is a fifth but I’ll keep that to myself.
So why do government employees behave this way? Everyone has to remember that being hired as a fulltime employee of the government is a sweet gig. The pay is above average, the benefits make most mouths water and they get more paid holidays than most. That’s the reason people refer to government jobs as golden-handcuffs. And why people call their retirement packages gold plated. Depending on the circumstances, people will protect their own interests at all costs because being fired by the government is not only difficult, it also makes one unemployable.
This is not to say that everyone who is hired as a fulltime employee by the government behaves in this manner. There are a lot of people who don’t. There are also a lot of people who do. If you haven’t read my last blog, there is a link at the bottom of this one. There were government gatekeepers in that blog but they played minor roles.
Who wants to put their job in jeopardy by stating a fact, correcting a wrong? Only people who have a moral compass and believe in him or her. But when you have clawed yourself half way up the slippery pole, it is can be easy to turn a blind eye, have a deaf ear and a mute mouth to what is really going on. And anytime there is money involved, people get funny. But then that applies to everyone, including the government. Just saying.
