As we all know some people are just, well, different. That difference can have us asking ourselves, “Seriously?” So when I was speaking with someone who had some strong feelings about society I said, “Oh I know what you mean. Sometimes, I don’t even want to check my mail.” This blog will start there.
As I was leaving my apartment building, an older woman holding an envelope, knocked on one of the glass doors. She did not live here but I let her in anyway because we have cameras everywhere.
After she thanked me she moved to the mail boxes and repeatedly tried to squeeze an over sized envelope into a mail slot. When that didn’t work she told me that she had complained to Canada Post weeks ago that the slots were too small and they still haven’t done anything.
That’s when I thought, “Seriously? You honestly think that Canada Post is going to re-fit all of the mail slots just so you can easily slide an unstamped envelope into one? A stamp is 57 cents. I’m sure Canada Post is going to get right on that after they cut back on their mail carriers.” (Just for the record, Canada Post did cut the number of their mail carriers.)
One day a bus driver noticed that someone didn’t get off at the stop they paid for. Since it’s a crime to take transit farther than what a person paid for, he asked the person to please leave. Nobody moved.
Two minutes later the bus driver started checking everyone’s tickets. All the while he continued to ask the person to please come forward as the Transit Police are on their way. Still nothing.
Finally the bus driver reached the culprit. Instead of getting off the bus, he started arguing with the bus driver. Even the Transit Police couldn’t get him to leave. After witnessing this from two seats behind, I asked myself, “Seriously? Who does this guy think he is?” Then I said, “I have to get to work and I paid my full fare. Could someone please do something before I am late and get docked 15 minutes of pay?”
The Transit Police stopped trying to reason with the man and began to gently physically guide him off the bus as he continued to resist them. From my calculations the difference in the fares is less than 60 cents but it cost me and the other passengers over 20 minutes of our time.
Right after I picked up my first business cards, (which look fantastic by the way,) I decided to treat myself to a leather business card holder. I knew just the store. I also knew I wasn’t exactly dressed for it but I wasn’t going home to change. So I walked in slowly, went directly to the counter and asked for some assistance.
The salesclerk was extremely helpful and we were at the cash register within minutes. Just as we were about to complete the transaction a very well dressed woman interrupted us. The salesclerk and I gave each other a knowing look before she answered the lady’s question.
When the lady was out of ear shot, I quietly said, “Seriously? I know that I’m not exactly dressed for this store but even I know enough to wait for the end of a transaction before interrupting.” Then I thought money doesn’t buy you etiquette.
I am sure everyone has their own examples of why they ask themselves, “Seriously?” Those are only three of mine.
