Gossip vs.Fact

Hi Everyone,

Before I found the link for, The Corporation, yesterday I was going to blog about gossip. And then my blog took an interesting turn.

Yesterday as I was listening to a business show the anchors were discussing how gossip in the workplace is helpful to weed out the slackers. I thought that “gossip” was an interesting choice of words for their topic.

I already know what the definition of gossip is, but I thought I’d look it up just for fun. This is what I found in two dictionaries.

gossip: one who chatters idly about others.

gossip: casual talk especially about other peoples’ affairs.

Then for fun, I looked up the word fact. This is what I found in two dictionaries.

fact: something known to have happened or to be true or exist.

fact: 1) a deed, especially a criminal deed. 2) a thing that has actually happened or is really true. 3) reality; truth

These definitions are important because they are vastly different. Not every thing people say about others is true or a fact. Most gossip is fabricated to suit the needs of the designer.

Everyone has a personal agenda. Those of us who have a strong moral compass do not better ourselves at the expense of others. BUT there are people who do.

I could give lots of examples of how gossip has effected me but I won’t. But I will say this though. Years ago, I stopped allowing gossip to hurt me, because that is exactly why people waste endless hours of their day or week gossiping. I actually find gossip very intriguing since people gossip about others without knowing them. I also find it equally intriguing when other people believe them without question.

Those two elements alone or combined, say a lot about the character and in my opinion, the intelligence of individuals. Don’t forget, people waste time when they gossip.

If I sense someone has been gossiping about me, I laugh it off. Unfortunately not everyone who is being gossiped about is as thick skinned as me.

So I would like people to consider how they felt when people gossiped about them. I hope those negative feelings make them rethink their thoughts, words, and actions before they become a habit. (If you don’t know what I mean, here is a link to a blog that I posted, http://arebelsrant.com/book-people-are-idiots-and-i-can-prove-it/ )What comes around goes around. It may not be in the same way, but it will come back and it will be 10 times worse.

And if you’re that interested enough to gossip about someone who could use a hand up, then you should be interested enough to help them! (Thanks Dave)

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events and small minds discuss people”

Need I say more?

What do you want your mind to be known for?

Are you fabricating something to suit the design for your next gossip session?

Thank you for reading, A. Rebel’s Rant!   ;D
