Harlan Ellison, Dark Dreamers Part 3–My Thoughts

Hi Everyone,

When I first watched the third part of Dark Dreamers with Harlan Ellison I burst out laughing because I thought Harlan made some really great points.

The first point is that writing is hard. Harlan doesn’t mention in this interview that he sits in his robe while he writes. However, I will admit to sitting my pajamas all day, or until I have to leave my apartment. That is pretty much the only perk to writing/working from home.

The second point is at the 4:50 minute mark of the 7:51 minute video. It is here when Harlan says, “It is a generation of people, KIDS, who think that they deserve everything. They don’t know why they deserve it, but they deserve it. And their pissed off when they don’t get it! Their annoyed when they don’t get everything without even having to work. Hey man, it’s not fair……”

I thought that the above was very interesting because as usual, Harlan was ahead of his time. This is what I mean.

In one of the Dark Dreamer videos, Harlan states that he is 66. I just looked up his age on Wikipedia and he was born on May 27th, 1934, meaning that the Dark Dreamers episodes were taped about 12 years ago.

On June 20, 2009 I watched a documentary on manners and the documentary mentioned a book. I know this because the very next day I bought the book titled, Generation Me with the subtitle, Why Today’s Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled–and More Miserable Than Ever Before, by Jean. M.Twenge, Ph.D. and recorded the day I started reading the book. Yes, I really did that and I try to do that with every book I read. Anyway….

Over the years, before and after I watched the documentary or read the book, I have noticed that, KIDS, as Harlan put it really do want everything without even having to work. I would see it in the ways most of my co-workers would coddle their adult children. Thankfully, I never had time to coddle my daughter like that and she is better off for it. BUT I would hear her say things like, so and so’s parents did…, etc.

Some of those 20+ year olds couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag if you paid them! I could go on about this but I won’t. Generation Me is an excellent book. It was published in 2006, or 6 years after Harlan stated that, “It’s a generation of people, KIDS, who think they deserve everything.” etc.

The caveat is this book is truthful. If you can’t handle the truth, then don’t read it. Don’t say I didn’t warn you because I did.
