The New Cradle To The Grave?

Hi Everyone,

In yesterday’s blog, The Cost of Coddling, (here is the link, http://arebelsrant.com/the-cost-of-coddling/) I mentioned some of the ways that parents coddle their children and the impact of their decisions. Unfortunately, those decisions extend further. Those decisions are literally having a negative economic global impact. This is what I mean.

There are parents, all over the world, who willingly financially provide EVERYTHING for their children even if their child is in their thirties or older. Why? Well, a growing number of parents don’t want their children to suffer in way, shape or form.

It is to the point that some parents will not allow or will discourage their children from taking employment unless the parent believes that it is WORTHY of their child. Some adult children have never had a job of any kind. I am serious.

Rightly or wrongly, some parents do not want their children to work at what they consider to be a demeaning, menial or labour intensive form of employment, like construction, any trade or whatever the parents do not approve of.

Unfortunately these decisions are coming at a time when employers globally are screaming for employees. Right now, the Canadian government is willing to waive all tuition costs and at times, even pay a student to learn a trade while they are in school just to meet the needs of Canadian employers. That free education and in some instances with free money, towards good paying jobs, some with good to great benefits, is still not being exercised.

Canada is not the only country that is, or has offered free education for trades or other forms of employment that are in demand. Every country has done that and will continue to do so. The need is too large to go ignored because the overall economy of the country is at stake. No country can grow at the rate it should if there aren’t workers to fill its needs. At the same time, no country can grow at the rate it should if people aren’t spending or investing money.

If parents continue to pay their child’s way in life, those same parents will have less money to spend not only now, today, but in their future for retirement. Couple that lack of financial contribution with the fact that their children aren’t contributing to the economy and the problem is amplified.

That has a huge economic impact on the country they reside in, the surrounding countries and the global economy as a whole. If parents continue to dismiss the importance of this for much longer all of our qualities of life will suffer, including that of the children they are trying to protect.

Some parents fear for their child’s safety and want their children to stay within their care so badly, that they have bought houses on the same street or condos in the same building. When parents buy houses and condos for their children so close to them, the parents generally also have keys which come in handy if one or both of the parents want to help with the cooking, cleaning etc.

That is another way parents are training their children to be dependent upon them. When people are dependent, or being enabled, they are not taught to take proper care of themselves. This poses a larger problem for the future that a lot of parents have not thought of. Few people can learn and then apply skills they have never used or knew they would need over night. Here is an example.

During one of my daughter’s high school classes, she discovered that she was one of the few people in her class who knew how to do laundry, pay bills via the bank machine, knew what bills needed to be paid, when and why, could take public transit by herself, and make change, etc.

The funny thing was she didn’t think the things I taught her were important until she realized that her classmates didn’t know how to do them. Now years later, my daughter is a fully independent young woman working on her dreams. Some of her classmates, however, are still fully dependent on their parents.
