Check The Labels! ;D

Hi Everyone,

If you read my blog, I Hate Being Inconvenienced When I’m Sick, then you would know that I can survive in my apartment when I am sick longer than most. (Here’s the link, http://arebelsrant.com/i-hate-being-inconvenienced-when-im-sick/)

But after being in my apartment and the building for almost a week I needed to get out. The laundry was piling up so the laundry mat was the first stop. After that I took a break before I went to the mall and the grocery store. My going to the mall was like a pit stop. I was in and out of the mall before anyone had time to see me. The grocery store lasted a bit longer.

Even though I had my list, I bought two extra things. One was lemons for my cold. The other was a packaged ham because I felt lazy and wanted something I could use in a variety of ways.

The last time I bought packaged ham was about 5-6 months ago. Since my head was still a bit foggy I asked a woman working in the meat department to help me.

As I told her the nutritional value of the ham I bought the last time, we started talking. “Oh, wow! This one has 32% sodium.” I say as I placed it back on the pile. “This one has like zero iron.” Again, I placed it back in the pile.

“At least you look at the labels. You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t. One of the girls here ate something and later said she didn’t feel well. When I asked her what she ate, I told her that that product was high in sugar. And the reason she felt sick was because she is diabetic. She just looked at me. Someone told her it was good for her. People just believe everything they hear.”

By now I’ve found the ham that is close enough to what I bought and she is working away. “Oh I know that people believe everything that they hear. It’s not just food. It’s everything. People scare me. A lot of them just blindly do whatever. If it sounds good it must be.”

I didn’t tell her I’ve watched countless documentaries on nutrition, food production and the long-term effects of a poor diet. After our brief conversation, she already knows my grey matter is moving.

I pulled out my list and headed for the next item–canned soup. Honestly, I didn’t want to buy canned soup, but I did, just in case I needed it. I quickly check the labels for the tomato soup.

Both had an equal amount of vitamins with one exception. One had 50% vitamin C while the other had zero. Gees, if I’m at home with a cold I’ll need that 50% vitamin C so I bought two. The other nice thing was that I saved money because the one with vitamin C was cheaper.

Do I check the labels of all the things that I buy? Absolutely! I even check where things are made. Sometimes I work out how long produce has been sitting on a truck, or boat.

I could go on about this about I won’t. Every one of us has a choice.
