Being Right

Hi Everyone,

Years ago, when I was in sales, I worked with a woman who would always misprice one item. After listening to her do that ALL day, I thought I should say something. She was a bit of tough cookie, so I chose my words carefully. Since it was over 10 years ago, I can’t remember exactly what I said, but I do know what happened after I hovered around her until I found the right words.

She stared straight into my eyes, pulled back her head, and lifted it up like a snake ready to attack as she hissed, “I don’t like to be corrected.” Hypnotized, my mental response was, “Well, I guess that means you should have the correct answer.”

So why am I telling you this? Well, there is a saying, and every time I hear it or think of it, I always think of her. ;D

The saying is, “Only a fool hates to be corrected.” And that is pretty much what I thought of her at the time since there were only 6-7 prices to remember.

Do I like to be corrected? Not really, but at least I have enough sense to recognize when I am wrong. Life is the best school and the people in our lives are our best teachers. Of course we will only learn if we are willing to be open to being corrected and open to constructive criticism. Few of us are. And I am no different. This is what I mean.

The other day, I was corrected on something. As the person spoke with me, after I was “being right,” I remembered the events, the above saying and admitted that I was wrong. Interestingly, I felt a weight had been lifted because not only could I respect myself, I believe that they, too could respect me. Why? Few of us like to be corrected! And even fewer of us can sincerely admit that we were wrong.

And really what is the point of defending yourself when you are wrong? It is a waste of time and energy in that moment and every moment after. Because if you are going to defend yourself once, you have to keep it up until you decide to fess up or until your dying breath. With people living longer every year, that is a lot of time and energy that could be used for something else.

Life is so much easier if we decide to be right with ourselves by admitting when we are wrong.
