Can People Save Time?

Hi Everyone,

There have been a few blogs where I have mentioned that time is money. Yesterday’s blog was the most recent. Since I believe that time is money, do I believe that people can save time? Yes and no. This is what I mean.

The reason for my indecision is that I strongly believe that people either waste their time or they invest their time. Period. But just as people save money, can people save time? I began to wonder about that yesterday as I walked to the library. That’s right I went to the library and NOT shopping on Black Friday. And the reason I walk to the library is that it’s faster than my walking to the bus stop, paying to take a bus, and then walking from the bus stop to the library only to repeat that on my way home, (in reverse).

My decision to walk to the library saved me time and money. I also got some exercise and some fresh air in the process. In that instance I saved more than time. I saved money while I invested in my health because walking is (still) healthy. On a side note: Unless you’re stuck in traffic, it’s difficult to watch a squirrel fully climb a tree with a mouthful of food. Just saying. ;D

Have the things that I learned so far this year saved me time? Overall I would say yes. Some learning curves took longer than others but they were worth it. My being more productive has allowed me more time to invest in learning new things which is an investment in me, my future. Other things I learned were, to date, a complete waste of my time. Who knows, maybe some of that new information will come in handy one day. Or at least I hope anyway.

So can people save time? In my opinion they can but it usually works best if it’s in conjunction with something else like my example above. But here is the rub. A lot of people believe that they are saving time when they really they are wasting it.

Shopping at peak times is one example. This is especially true if you have to park or if there is a delay of some kind. Another example is some forms of multi-tasking. If I spray a cleaner and have to wait 10 minutes while it works as I work on something small, I’m multi-tasking and saving time. The opposite is true if I have so many things on the go and I can’t focus on anything properly.

It is a proven fact that people use less of their time if they focus their energy on the task at hand but a lot of people don’t do that. It’s almost like they’ve brain washed themselves into believing that the more they have on the go, the more their getting done when really, everything gets lots in the chaos. If you don’t believe me try it.

The questions of the day are, are you wasting your time or investing it? Have you convinced yourself that you are saving time when really you aren’t?
