Hi Everyone,
When I need to get things done I weigh the scales of discipline vs. procrastination. It’s good to get ahead and get some things off a to-do list but sometimes sticking with the original plan is best. This is what I mean.
Earlier this week, the library called with one of their automated messages informing me that a DVD I had on hold was in. Since I was in the vicinity of the library later that day I debated if I should just go ahead and pick it up or not. The library was only an extra 10 minute walk. I had a lot going on last week. Having one less thing to do strongly appealed to me. But I had decided days before that I would go to the library on either Thursday or Friday. Weather-wise Thursday was better. Thursday it was despite my wanting to, “get ahead” of my plans for the week. But a funny thing happened.
The next day, the library called with another of their automated messages stating that another DVD I had on hold was also ready for me to pick up. That was on Wednesday. After hearing that, I was happy with my decision from the night before. Why go to the library twice in a week, when I planned to go once. That night I created my to-do list. One thing to-do was going to the library.
When I arrived home, I realized that I forgot to pick up a book I had written on the back of my list. That did and did not upset. For one, I am rereading a book to brush-up on something in the day and reading a light book at night. Had I of remembered that book, I would have let other things slide. I know myself. I would have read the book I’m reading during the day and started the one from the library the next day. Letting even more things slide. But then another funny thing happened.
On Friday I received a free webinar in my email on the exact topic of the book I forgot to get from the library. I thought perfect! Now I can read the books I have on the go and listen to the free webinar as I get some things done. That way, I can make mental notes of the things that are important to me before I start with my actual note-taking the second time I listen to it. And by the time I have to return the DVD’s, I’ll be finished the book I’m rereading and be able to focus on the book I wanted.
The point of today’s blog is stick with the plan! If you set out to do something, do it. When you do, make sure it won’t interrupt the rest of your day or week. It’s not procrastination when you’ve set a day or time to do something. It’s procrastination if you never do what you planned to do! The opposite is discipline.
