Are You Done Adulting?

Hi Everyone,

Is anyone ever done adulting? This is what I mean.

When I was growing up kids were kids. If anyone was taught how to be an adult, I didn’t know them. I, like a lot of people, figured it out as I went along. Luckily I was an avid reader of non-fiction books and watched documentaries while everyone else was doing whatever they were doing. I was also fascinated by business. All of the above helped me help myself. It also helped me help my daughter. You see she was in this class that had her thanking me in more ways than one.

According to her, her classmates didn’t know how to take care of themselves. They had no idea how to do laundry because they never had to do it. The same goes for buying groceries. Outside of my daughter and a few of her friends, knew how to take a bus. That I thought was scary since not only did we live in a city, it also had an extensive bus system of city and inter-city buses. Since my daughter and a few others knew how to take a bus, she knew she needed to have the exact amount because the city bus drivers didn’t make change.  Paying bills like hydro and rent were foreign to them too. This is especially true since few of my daughter’s classmates lived in apartments. Most of them only knew the bank of mom, dad and other relatives. In my humble opinion, these kids were not taught anything outside of how to study and dress.

People can (eventually) figure out how to do laundry if they don’t want to pay someone to do it for them. Groceries aren’t that big of a deal since buying prepared food, like barbequed chicken, is almost the same price if you were to do it yourself. Presto or other bus passes, if you don’t have a licence and a car is, now the norm. But money. How many adults know about money? Better yet how many adults want to know about finances? Do you know your credit score and why it is important?

Paying bills is a pain when you don’t know what you are doing and why it is important to do it. Taking care of your health is the easiest thing we can all do. Life is hard when you are sick and you have to be an adult. Trust me on that one. I know. But the hardest thing to do is adult someone who doesn’t want to grow up. And society is filled, littered actually, with people who want to remain kids even though their children are over 18, the legal age of an adult in most provinces.

If you think you are done adulting, think again. There is always something to learn. Trust me, I know. I am still learning, thereby, adulting everyday. We are never done.
