Baby Boxes

Hi Everyone,

The first time I heard of Baby Boxes was on Thursday, November 1, 2012, in an article in the Toronto Metro newspaper. I saved the article and was a bit surprised to see another article in today’s paper.

The best way to describe a Baby Box is this. Think of those over-night deposit slots outside of banks, but with a larger slot, heated and no cameras. Some Baby Boxes are attached to hospitals while others are located in remote areas within European cities.

Once the baby is put in the box, the person who dropped the baby off has two minutes to leave in privacy. After that a care unit, like a hospital, orphanage or like is notified and the child is picked up and taken to safety. All of this is in an effort to stop child abandonment and infant murder. Both of which are on the rise. And it is no wonder with all the financial difficulties that European countries have been having for the last few years.

In today’s article, the UN stated that they want to ban Baby Boxes. I don’t know if that would help. This is why.

I grew up in a middle-class neighbourhood with the exception of one cul-de-sac a block away with HUGE houses. Some of those houses had immigrant workers. I know this because one of those workers put her child in a black garbage bag and tossed the garbage bag into the ravine behind the house she worked in.

My neighbour who lived right across the street from me found the baby and reported it to the police. That discovery and the police investigation was BIG news for a small community. The police found the mother and she was removed from her employment. My neighbour, who was in his early teens, was freaked out for months.

A woman who most likely would have lost her employment because of her pregnancy still lost her job. For the longest time my neighbour was known for finding the baby. And of course, the saddest of all is that a baby was murdered.

But here is the thing, people are going to have unprotected sex because of their religious beliefs, lack of funds, lack of judgement or a combination of the above. Some of them will get pregnant and some won’t. Some will be able to keep the child whereas others will not.

It could be their economic position, their family embarrassment, or whatever life throws at them. But here is the bottom line, if people keep children they don’t want or can’t properly provide for, that child will be more of a financial burden on society in the long-run. If you don’t believe me read Freakonomics. I borrowed it from the library but I still remember that. I am pretty sure the chapter I am referring to is called, Roe vs Wade.

Since I read that chapter and have been following topics like this for years, I am of the opinion that Baby Boxes might be the only solution that Europe has from having abandoned or murdered babies, until it can educate and/or properly employ it’s population. Desperate times will make people do desperate things!

If you want to learn more about this just put The Associated Press Baby Boxes into any search engine and you will find more articles than you would like.  🙁
