Hi Everyone,
The Canadian government is tighten the ability for Hungarians to immigrate to Canada. There has been a lot of talk about this for years. Here are two links for two different TV shows. Their point of view is glaringly different.
The first link is from a TV show called 16 X 9 which aired on Friday November 8th, 2012.

In it you will see Tamas.I met him as a fluke in June 2012 before the producers of 16 X 9 approached him to be interviewed for the above segment. When I saw him on TV I was pretty sure that we met and called him the next day. I was right. Tamas never told me he was a victim of a human trafficker.
The second link is from The National which aired on Thursday December12th, 2012, and it has a very different view of the Roma Gypsies from 16 X 9.

The above link will get you to the site for The National. If you don’t want to watch the whole show then scroll down to a video called “Seeking Safety”. The National updates their website all the time. In the future you may want have to use the “Seeking Safety” to see the video. I will check on this in the coming days.
Why is this important to me? I am a first generation Canadian. Both of my parents are Hungarian. My daughter and I are dual citizens of Canada and Hungary. We have also lived in Europe for almost a year, most of it in Hungary.
In early December 2001, we went to the Canadian Embassy in Budapest. It was the same day that Canada enforced that all Hungarians pay for a Visa to Canada before they left Hungary. The reason? Some Hungarians never go back to Hungary. Sometime after that, Canada lifted the Visa requirement. I think it may have been when Hungary joined the European Union.
About 2 years ago, about 235 Hungarian Roma Gypsies landed in Toronto’s Person Airport seeking asylum in Canada. They were all sent back to Hungary.
Hungary is a poor country. Their bonds have been downgraded to Junk Bonds years ago. Hungary is in the same, if not worse, economic position of Greece. This is rarely mentioned because Hungary has not yet been qualified to use the Euro currency. If Hungary were a full member of the EU it would be in the news more often.
Everyone in Hungary is suffering. The Forint, their currency has gained some strength in the last few months. Today it takes $272 Canadian dollars to earn 60,000 Forints. That is the average monthly wage. Work is scarce. Think America in 2008/9 and times that by ten. I know this not only because I am an information junkie, I also keep in contact with my cousins and my aunt.
I called her this morning to see what she knew about the discrimination of Roma Gypsies. She knew nothing. This surprised me because she is also an information junkie. She reads the paper and watches the news everyday. And people talk a lot in small hamlets. News travels fast!
I thought that I could jog her memory with a few of my stories involving Roma Gypsies. She did tell me that all of the gypsies moved out of the hamlet I am a legal resident of.
When I saw my dad today he told me that someone we knew was married to a Roma. That’s I when I remembered one of my cousins marrying one. They had two boys.
Bottom line: There is good and bad in every race. I am of the belief that Roma Gypsies have succumbed to generational conditioning. It is not resolved overnight. In the last few years, Roma Gypsies have been kicked out France, Italy and Spain. Those are the countries that I can remember yet there are more.
This is not just a problem of Hungary or Canada. I know this because I have been following the Roma’s for a long time.
Please watch both videos to form an educated opinion.
