Air Fresheners Etc.

Hi Everyone,

This is what I don’t understand about people when it comes to air fresheners, etc. For one, if so many people are freaked by the chemicals in things, then why do so many people not only buy air fresheners, and other things, that I don’t know the names of because they don’t interest me, but are also used to freshen the air? This is what I mean.

In all the 17 years I sold fragrances at varying stores in the GTA, Greater Toronto Area, there would ALWAYS be at least one person per day who would ask something like, “Oh! How can you breathe in here?!?!?!? I could SMELL the perfume before I entered the store!” I always found that question interesting as I breathe like everyone else who isn’t on oxygen. If I was on oxygen, I wouldn’t be selling fragrance!

But as I am sure you guessed, ALL of those questions and statements finally got to me and I finally asked a woman who looked like she was petrified of becoming ill from the scent of the fragrances, not perfume, because there is a difference, if she had and used scented candles. She said she did. Then I told her that there were more chemicals, including OIL, you know BLACK GOLD, in her scented candles and that fragrances are actually less toxic than her scented candles.  Sorry to inform you but that is the truth. Here’s another truth.

There are fragrance houses whom are on the CUSP of being FORCED to change the ingredients of their fragrances that they’ve had for YEARS if not DECADES because apparently people have a problem with fragrances yet people don’t seem to have a problem spraying their varying living environments and/or sticking things in their electrical sockets to scent up a place. Really? If that doesn’t sound off to you, then maybe you are!

And I know all about how all of this whole, “Let’s freshen the air!” started. If you want to know too, then I suggest you read Charles Duhigg’s book called, The Power of Habit. The subtitle is, Why We do What We Do In Life and Business. It explains it all. On a side note, I would like to thank my daughter for buying that for me. The book, The Power of Habit, is AWESOME. What isn’t so awesome is that some of the new products that companies are marketing now for better sleep by spraying a room or area before bed are really an innovation.

The reason I say that is because about 16 to 18 years ago, a fragrance house, that I don’t like, actually conducted a study of how fragrances improve sleep. Just so everyone knows, they never really marketed how spraying fragrance on the body, in the bedroom or on the bed before going to sleep actually helps someone sleep a deeper sleep, thereby, having the person feeling more refreshed in the morning. My daughter and I have been doing that since I heard of it! It works too, by the way.

So the point of today’s blog is this. You can go out and buy, hopefully your hard earned money, on these air fresheners and other things or you can go out and buy fragrance if by chance you don’t already have a fragrance that you like at home. Since there are only at least 200 fragrances to choose from I suggest you narrow your search to something you like, such as floral or woodsy, and buy a gift set as all the fragrance Christmas gift sets are about to arrive in a store near you any day if they aren’t already out, meaning clearly visible, like on a counter or a table.

From an economic stand point, I would start with the any fragrances I had at home, use them, get a Christmas gift set or at the very least a free gift with purchase and use fragrances to give you a better night’s sleep than the other stuff because the other stuff doesn’t last as long, meaning you will end up spending more money in the long run.

But hey, if you want to continue using those air fresheners etc. go ahead. I can’t stop you. But the question of the day is, who is going to stop the government of France and other members of the European Union from making fragrance houses change their ingredients because apparently people can’t stand the scent of fragrance but can stand air fresheners? Exactly!
